Everyone wants to be happy. We spend our money, time, and energy chasing our version of the good life. And on the way, we run ourselves into physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. But what if the happiness we’re all striving for isn’t the happiness we were created for?

Pastor and author Dr. Derwin L. Gray believes there is a better road to happiness, and it is found in the Beatitudes of Jesus. In this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus revealed the shocking, countercultural path to true flourishing. It comes not through wealth, fame, or laughter but through poverty, obscurity, and mourning.

True happiness comes from a heart directed toward the kingdom of God and satisfied in Jesus the King. This 8-session small-group teen Bible study demonstrates how Jesus taught us to search for, find, and hold on to the good life.

Video Sessions

  • Session 1: Happy Are the Beggars [12:23]—We’re all hardwired to search for happiness, but at some point in our lives, we realize no matter how hard and how long we work, we’ll never achieve lasting happiness. The kind of happiness we long for isn’t about perpetually feeling good or good things consistently happening to us. In this session, Dr. Derwin L. Gray helps us to see happiness is found by beggars in God’s kingdom. Being poor in spirit means you see and accept your spiritual bankruptcy so you can make room for Christ’s treasures.
  • Session 2: Happy Are Those Who Lament [12:21]—Jesus defines happiness very differently than we would. In this session, Dr. Derwin L. Gray shows us true happiness is found in an unexpected place—lament. Here we see that happy are those who lament are joyful because they are cemented in God’s comfort. Pain sends us into our purpose. Out of broken hearts, we cry out to God, and His comforting grace moves us to comfort others.
  • Session 3: Happy Are the Humble [8:28]—Jesus said happiness is found in humility. While many would claim humility is a good trait to possess, fewer put humility into practice. True humility doesn’t call attention to itself but focuses away from itself towards others. In this session, Dr. Derwin L. Gray examines humility from God’s perspective. Humility gives us supernatural abilities to accomplish God’s mission.
  • Session 4: Happy Are the Hungry and Thirsty [8:35]—In this session, Dr. Derwin L. Gray shows us that the heartache we all experience when we see hurt and injustice in the world is actually a longing for the good life that God has promised to us in Christ. We are God’s agents of grace and redemption. Happiness is found in becoming God’s paintbrush to create beauty where there’s ugliness, hope where there’s despair, and salvation where there’s death.
  • Session 5: Happy Are the Merciful [10:08]—Mercy is God presenting Himself to us in the midst of our mess. In this session, Dr. Derwin L. Gray teaches that happiness and mercy go hand in hand. They’re two sides of the same coin. The good life comes to us as we extend mercy to those in need. Mercy isn’t afraid to cross ethnic, cultural, and religious barriers or give itself away to bring the kingdom of God to bear on earth.
  • Session 6: Happy Are the God-Seers [10:11]—The greater we see Jesus, the more He’ll influence us because we’re only capable of worshiping someone whom we deem greater than us. In this session, Dr. Derwin L. Gray teaches us what it means to be pure in the eyes of God. Once we become pure in Jesus, He invites us into life as a God-Seer. Happy are the pure because they will see God.
  • Session 7: Happy Are the Peacemakers [11:05]—Becoming a peacemaker comes from the overflow of being empowered by God the Holy Spirit to live a righteous and merciful life. In this session, Dr. Derwwin L. Gray speaks about the happiness that comes from being reconciled with other people. The good life, a life of happiness, is loving God, ourselves, and all of humanity.
  • Session 8: Happy Are the Persecuted [13:51]—In this last session, Dr. Derwin L. Gray teaches that happy are those who are persecuted for their identification with Jesus. While it may be unsettling to think of persecution bringing happiness, God often reveals His redemptive plan through persecution. In God’s sovereign goodness, He’ll take persecution and use it to teach us how to rely on Him to provide.
