About this Item
The Greatest Week in History: Luke's Account of the Passion Week
There have been many significant events that have marked time. The signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Battle at Pearl Harbor, the first step on the Moon, and September 11, 2001 are all etched into the minds of Americans. These dates represent not just dates, but also the character of our nation. As significant as these dates may be within the context of American history, they are secondary compared to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. That one event and the week leading up to it marks all of history for eternity. These seven days serve as the foundation for both the character and substance of Christianity. In these days of tolerance, it appears that the distinctives of the Christian faith are being lost or at least blurred. In some settings, the teachings of Jesus have become the focus as opposed to His sacrificial redemption. Jesus is more than a great teacher or worthy example. First and foremost, He is Savior. The purpose of this study would be to call people back to the cross and the events leading up to his resurrection. January Bible Study has featured several studies from the gospels through the years. Some studies have provided a survey of the book, while other studies have focused on a specific topic or theme within a Gospel account. In 2005, the JBS study was a survey of Mark with one chapter dedicated to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. This study will be the first in the 66 year history of JBS (began in 1948) that we have focused on Christ's final week. Luke wrote his account to a Gentile audience. He focused on the universal ministry of Jesus, going beyond the Jewish expectations of a Messiah. The majority of those who will participate in this study fall into this category, so Luke's account was selected.
