Overview

“None of the good promises the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed. Everything was fulfilled.” Joshua 21:45

The book of Joshua chronicles God’s continuing faithfulness to fulfill His covenant promises to Abraham. It is a book of transitions, in which Joshua rises to leadership and the people of God step across the Jordan into the long-awaited land of promise. The task of possessing the land will test the limits of their strength and their courage, but God’s covenant will not fail them. And Joshua’s faithful example will whisper toward the perfect faithfulness of Christ Himself.

In this 10-session, verse-by-verse study of the book of Joshua, Jen Wilkin helps us see how God’s commands, though sometimes difficult, are always rooted in His steadfast love for His people. Israel’s story is our story. We battle not against flesh and blood as they did, but we courageously war against the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, trusting in the finished work of the true and better Joshua, Jesus Christ.

Video Sessions:
  • A Word for Leaders (03:51)—Are you leading or facilitating discussion for a Bible study group going through Joshua? Don't miss this video of encouragement and direction from Jen as you prepare to lead other women through this study.
  • Week One: Introduction (45:11)—In this introductory video, Jen describes her Bible study methodology and what to expect from her study approach to the book of Joshua. Watch this video with your group or on your own before you begin your study.
  • Week Two: A Leader Called (41:00)—Jen teaches through Joshua 1, where we see Joshua installed as successor to the great leader Moses. After forty years of wandering, God’s people are at last poised to enter the land of Canaan.
  • Week Three: Faith in an Unlikely Place (35:42)—In her teaching of Joshua 2, Jen explains how Joshua sets his sights on Jericho—a fortress city located west of the Jordan—and the unlikely help Israel finds within its walls, a woman whose story can teach us much about fear, faith, and faithfulness.
  • Week Four: Crossing Jordan (52:08)—In this session, Jen teaches through Joshua 3:1–5:12, where we see God challenging His people to trust and obey, to follow His lead, and to remember His promises—habits we, too, must be mindful to practice.
  • Week Five: Jericho in Ruins (49:44)—This video features Jen’s teaching on Joshua 5:13–6:27, which recounts the battle of Jericho. Jen helps viewers understand within the greater context of the book of Joshua as a whole. A man trained in war, Joshua was no doubt preparing himself mentally for a lengthy siege, but God had other plans for His people.
  • Week Six: The Cost of Deception (44:53)—As we continue through the book of Joshua, Jen teaches on Joshua 7–9. Joshua must address deception in Ai and Gibeon, two reminders for God’s people of the implications of covenant living.
  • Week Seven: Victory Both South and North (53:30)—In Joshua 10–12, Jen highlights again how God fights for His people. By conquering Jericho, Ai, and Gibeon, Joshua has driven a geographic wedge between the northern kings and the southern kings of Canaan. Stricken with panic at the news of the fall of Ai and Gibeon’s treaty, the king of Jerusalem hastens to form a united front with his neighbors.
  • Week Eight: Possessing the Land—Part 1 (49:13)—Having entered the promised land (Joshua 1–4) and having conquered the promised land (Joshua 5–12), it is now time for the people of Israel to possess the promised land (Joshua 13–21). In this study of Joshua 13–17, Jen begins to examine how that process took place.
  • Week Nine: Possessing the Land—Part 2 (44:55)—In her teaching of Joshua 18–21, Jen explains the remaining tribal allotments, Israel’s establishment of the first center for religious life at Shiloh, and how Joshua urges the remaining tribes to take possession of the land, which the LORD, the God of their fathers, had given them. At long last, the nation will have rest.
  • Week Ten: The Land at Rest (46:30)—Jen concludes her teaching with Joshua 22–24. With the land subdued before them and the boundary lines laid, Israel is at last ready to settle into her inheritance, and an aging Joshua will begin measuring out his final careful words. Hear Joshua’s call to obedience as a call to you personally.
