What Christmas Teaches Us About God: An Advent Sermon Series
Advent is an ideal time to give your church a balanced diet of God’s Word and to highlight the theology at the heart of Christmas. This four-week series from Mat Alexander, senior pastor of First Baptist Church Gadsden, shows what the coming of Christ teaches us about who God is. Each sermon is built on a key Scripture passage and is both theologically rich and practical to preach. Together they help your congregation delight in the truth of the gospel: God keeps His promises, cannot deny Himself, is holy, and is rich in mercy.
Week-by-Week Sermon Starters
Week 1: He Keeps His Promises (Isaiah 9:1-7)
God never needs a contract to keep His word. In Christ, He fulfills His promises of redemption, joy, and just rule.
Week 2: He Cannot Deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:11-13)
Because God is both just and the justifier, the gospel gives us future hope, reminds us of the stakes, and guarantees His faithfulness even when ours falters.
Week 3: He Is Holy (Isaiah 53:1-12)
Our sin is an affront to a holy God, and only God could satisfy His own holiness. That is why Jesus was born to die for sinners.
Week 4: He Is Rich in Mercy (Titus 3:1-7)
God saved us not because of what we had done but out of His own mercy. The feasting, gifts, and joy of Christmas are small pictures of that grace.
