Churches flourish when disciples are being formed. And small group leaders are right in the middle of that work. But many leaders step into their role unsure of what a healthy small group looks like. Without clear language, evaluation often boils down to attendance, energy in the room, or whether the discussion felt awkward. Those things matter, but none of them tell us if people are becoming more like Jesus.
If we want our groups to be environments where disciples are formed, not just meetings that occur, we must equip leaders with a vision and vocabulary rooted in spiritual transformation.
Lifeway Research has identified eight signposts consistently present in the lives of believers growing in maturity. These aren’t checklists; they’re indicators that discipleship is happening. When leaders grasp these markers, they gain a clearer picture of what they’re aiming for. And when pastors use the same language, coaching conversations move far beyond, “How did group go?”
The 8 Signposts
1. Bible Engagement
We help people shape their thinking and actions with Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16–17). Leaders can ask, “Is God’s Word showing up in their week?”
2. Obeying God and Denying Self
Transformation shows up in obedience (Luke 9:23). Leaders ask, “How is this passage calling us to live differently?”
3. Serving God and Others
Growing disciples turn outward (Matt. 25:40). Groups ask, “Who can we bless this month?”
4. Sharing Christ
Mature believers speak about the hope they have (1 Pet. 3:15). Leaders normalize this with, “Who are you praying for?”
5. Exercising Faith
Faith grows when we trust God beyond our comfort (Gal. 2:20). Leaders ask, “Where is God stretching you?”
6. Seeking God
Disciples pursue God daily, not just weekly (Matt. 6:33). Leaders ask, “How are you seeking Him this week?”
7. Building Relationships
Healthy groups deepen in honesty, connection, and prayer (Acts 2:42). Leaders ask, “Are we becoming more like family?”
8. Unashamed
Growing believers identify with Christ publicly (Rom. 1:16). Leaders celebrate bold faith.
When leaders understand these signposts, groups become more than gatherings but environments where disciples are formed and the church flourishes. If we aim at nothing, we will hit it every time. These signposts give us a direction worth pursuing together.
