The YOU Bible Study is a life-centered resource that leverages the unique lifestyles of African American and urban individuals. Since it’s creation in 2008, YOU has been committed to meeting the needs of the of the urban and multicultural church community. YOU recognizes the need for people to learn and apply biblical principles within the context of their own homes, churches, and communities. This is the reason YOU exists.
Discipleship in the African American community has a history rooted in faith that speaks to real lives, real struggles, and real hope. From praise houses to modern congregations, the Black church has interpreted Scripture through the lens of lived experience. Because of this history, context remains essential when creating a Bible study curriculum that genuinely to its intended audience.
The truth of Scripture does not change, but those persons being discipled live in an ever-changing world. If the curriculum churches use does not guide people to connect the Word of God to daily life, then Bible study has the potential to become something people do but not the source of spiritual transformation it is intended to be.
Additionally, intentionality given to context helps teacher leaders design instruction that resonates with learners across generations. Younger believers may wrestle with cultural questions, justice issues, and identity concerns that traditional studies might overlook. Older generations may desire lessons that connect their lived faith to the current issues in society. A context-sensitive curriculum can unify these diverse needs and strengthen discipleship across generations while simultaneously affirm identity. The YOU Bible Study continues to be that resource.
In addition to the Bible study content and teaching plans, the personal study guide includes:
Articles that offer an extra layer of knowledge to strengthen retention and enforce the lessons learned in each study
Special features such as: “Did You Know?” that provides an African American or urban historical fact or cultural update connected to the session.
The YOU Leader Pack is a companion item that has variety of visual aids, such as maps, charts, and posters to aid in the teaching of Scripture.
The YOU Blog contains yet another layer of resources, such as articles, commentary and the YOU podcast for both learners and leaders to grow in the faith.
All these components form a complete discipleship experience designed to grow God’s people using examples and references that resonate with today’s black, urban and multicultural church.
Ultimately, context matters because discipleship is not just information—it is transformation. Our purpose is not merely learning the Bible but living it. When Bible study resources are Christ-centered, honor the history of a people, and acknowledge present realities; they cultivate disciples who are spiritually grounded, culturally aware, and mission driven to advance God’s kingdom.
