Evolution and progression is routine to the growth and development of every major industry. Currently the faith-based film industry is in the midst of its latest evolution. A rather new company, Fathom Events, has recently stepped onto the scene making it possible for lower budget film projects to have a presence in theaters with a one-night event style theatrical release.
In 2012 Fathom Events released it’s first “inspirational” (faith-based) film with Kirk Cameron’s Monumental. The following year, their second film in the genre released in theaters with Kirk Cameron’s follow-up, Unstoppable.
With a growing interest beginning to build around 2014, Fathom took note of the trend and took action. “We noticed after several releases in this space that people were really responding to cause-related content.” Fathom Events Senior Programming Manager, Katie Sawyer-Stachler says. “From there we determined this was something we needed to focus more on specifically because it gave viewers a chance to apply their faith to cause related issues going on in the world.”
In 2016 LifeWay Films partnered with Fathom for its first ever theatrical release with the distribution of the documentary The Insanity of God.
Sawyer-Stachler says one of their biggest interests moving forward is content directed at leaders in the church. “We really want to try to focus on content for pastors and key influencers in the faith based space as we continue to grow.”
Fathom takes many steps in its process of looking for new and exciting content, but none is more vital to the puzzle than the audience.
“When considering content, one of the most important things we look at is whether or not it has a community around it,” Sawyer-Stachler says. “Will it bring that tribe of people out for a one night event?”
As the world of Christian film continues to grow and progress into new ways of storytelling or overall distribution, Fathom Events believes new styles of film are just on the horizon. “Cause related and biblical awareness films are very popular for us, but I think there is a space for Christian music where we haven’t really touched on in the past.”
After 5 years and 22 releases, Kirk Cameron’s Unstoppable continues to hold the top spot for best performing Fathom Event in the inspirational (faith-based) category.
Fathom Events releases it’s next inspirational (faith-based) film tonight with Sight & Sound Theaters Jonah: On Stage! Visit FathomEvents.com for more info on this and other great upcoming films.
