If you are like me, you spend a lot of your free time consuming media from a variety of sources throughout the day or week. We are constantly surfing the internet, watching videos, news feeds, TV programming, sports, and movies.
Often we forget or don’t even realize there is an army of people working in media trying to make a living and the daily
grind of content production to fulfill all these channels. I recently got an email from a ministry that seeks t
o pray and disciple men and women working in the entertainment industry in Hollywood. It truly is a mission field to support our brothers and sisters working in these secular environments that provide so much cultural power in our world.
Here is a portion of the letter:
Recently, we made numerous connections with secular media leaders at Variety’s Purpose: Family Entertainment & Faith-Based Summit, many with the invitation to a follow-up meeting. The event draws Hollywood’s top studio and network heads who hope to better understand the faith and family audience, but there is also a strong showing of Christian media professionals. During lunch I sat at a table with nine Christian producers and screenwriters, and one of them commented, “I can’t tell you how much of a lifeline this is to me! I feel like my soul is getting refilled to go back to the grind tomorrow.”
I was reminded that as much as our small, dedicated field team perseveres, there is no way we alone will reach the thousands upon thousands working in the ranks of media. But as we embrace the model of Jesus and His disciples—empowering the growing number of Christians in media and encouraging them to see their careers as a mission—many more lives will be touched.
How awesome is that! Stop and say a prayer for Hollywood and those working in the media today. If you would like to get involved and learn more I encourage you to check out MasterMedia International.
