Session 1: You Are Made for God’s Story [40:51]
Everyone loves a great story, and that is no accident. God has made us to be story people, and He has given us much of His Word in the form of stories. Author George Guthrie says the great stories in Scripture reveal what God is up to in the universe. With amazing depth and power, the Bible draws us into the story, changes us by the story, and transforms us for God’s grand purposes.
Session 2: Getting to the Heart of God’s Story [39:06]
Author George Guthrie compares the bookends of the Bible, Genesis 1–3 and Revelation 19–22, to illustrate the consistency, intentionality, artistry, and wisdom with which God designed His Word. Woven through the pages of Scripture are three overarching themes that reveal God’s intention for all people to know His face, thrive in His space, and extend His grace in the world.
Session 3: Knowing God’s Face [55:26]
God’s face—His personal presence among His people—is an important key to understanding the Bible. Author George Guthrie points out that God desires a personal relationship with us in which we trust Him and live by the principles He has provided in His Word. God’s presence and God’s principles always go together, and the Bible teaches us the right way to live. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross dealt with the problem of sin so that we can be brought back before the face of God.
Session 4: Thriving in God’s Space, Part 1 [47:17]
Throughout the Bible God provided sacred spaces for people to walk with and know Him. As author George Guthrie examines the tabernacle in the wilderness and Solomon’s temple in the Old Testament, he explains what the biblical details reveal about God’s desire to be with His people. When we develop a longing to be in God’s presence, we naturally want to follow His ways.
Session 5: Thriving in God’s Space, Part 2 [46:22]
Author George Guthrie explains how God’s desire to be with His people was expressed in Jesus’ relationship to Herod’s temple while the Messiah was on earth. Jesus’ cleansing of the temple not only set things right with the worship of God but also anticipated a time when the Gentiles would flow into the city as worshipers of God. With Jesus’ death and resurrection, the temple was no longer the center for worship in the world. Instead, God transferred His dwelling place to His people through His indwelling Holy Spirit. The people of God on earth are now the temple of God, and one day we will be with Him forever in His heavenly dwelling place.
Session 6: Extending God’s Grace in the World [44:15]
Author George Guthrie teaches that God’s grace is extended to us in the heart of God’s story. God’s grace brings new-creation life in Christ. God’s grace pursues us to rescue us from sin. God’s grace disrupts and erupts by changing things to be what they are supposed to be. God’s grace saves and transforms us as we are re-created in the holy image of Christ. God wants to extend grace to us so that He can then extend grace through us to the world.
