CULTURE HAS CHANGED. CHURCH BELIEFS SHOULDN'T.

It’s easy for our culture of individuality and innovation to shape the way we think about the church. With so many questions, opinions, and interpretations among people today—even within the church—what should we all agree on as essential to Christian faith?

For more than 1,600 years the Apostles’ Creed has united the church around core Christian doctrines as revealed in Scripture. This historic confession points us to the foundational beliefs of our faith and the life-changing truth of the gospel.

The Apostles’ Creed is a 12-week Bible study that takes students into the foundations of Christianity for a closer look at what we believe. This study uses the Apostles’ Creed to help students grow in their understanding of the Christian faith, live as disciples of Christ, and experience a profound sense of belonging within the kingdom of God.

Video Sessions

  • Session 1: I Believe In (13:01)—In this first session Matt Chandler introduces the study and talks about the importance of belief. He discusses how the Apostles’ Creed holds no authority in and of itself. Scripture alone is the authoritative Word of God for our lives and churches. The creed is, however, an accurate summary of Christian doctrine affirmed by generations of faithful Christians throughout history.
  • Session 2: God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth (19:00)—The God of the Bible has given Himself to us as Trinity. We believe God has eternally existed as one essence and three distinct Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Each Person is fully God, yet at the same time, there’s only one God. In this session Matt Chandler introduces the first Person of the triune Godhead and three titles defining His character: Father, Almighty, and Creator.
  • Session 3: And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, Our Lord (14:15)—This session introduces Jesus, the second Person of the Trinity, using three titles to define His character: Christ, Son, and Lord. When we see the name Jesus, we’re reminded of our Lord as both the Son of God and the historical man who bore that name.
  • Session 4: Who was Conceived by the Holy Spirit; Born of the Virgin Mary (15:15)—This week introduces the third Person of the Trinity: the Holy Spirit—the mysterious and therefore most misunderstood Person of the Trinity. The emphasis on this line of the creed, and in the Bible, is on the activity of God in the incarnation of Jesus, not on why He chose Mary as Jesus’ mother. However, Mary provides a beautiful picture of responding to God in faith, even in confusing or challenging circumstances.
  • Session 5: Suffered Under Pontius Pilate; Was Crucified, Dead, and Buried (12:03)—Last session Matt Chandler looked at the birth of Jesus. This week we’ll see why He was born: Jesus’ incarnation was necessary for His crucifixion. He was born to die, but He died so that we could truly live.
  • Session 6: He Descended into Hell; the Third Day He Rose Again from the Dead (18:10)—This session examines the most controversial phrase in the creed: “He descended into hell.” The phrase isn’t always included in the creed, depending on the particular church, denomination, or tradition. Matt Chandler chose to include it, approaching the subject as a means of emphasizing the totality of Jesus’ experience in atoning for sin in death.
  • Session 7: He Ascended into Heaven and Sits on the Right Hand of the Father Almighty (13:32)—This session is one of victory and celebration after the previous weeks of suffering, death, and the grave. Much as the descent into hell highlighted the fullness of Jesus’ death, His ascension into heaven highlights the fullness of His resurrected life. The emphasis in this session is on the authority of Christ and on His ongoing power and presence by His Spirit.
  • Session 8: From Whence He Shall Come to Judge the Living and the Dead (11:35)—Mike Dsane leads this session to talk about the beauty of God’s judgement. This session has two primary points: Jesus will return, and He will judge everyone. The emphasis of this session and of the creed isn’t on how and when Jesus’ return may happen. The point is simply that it will happen and that it will mean judgment.
  • Session 9: I Believe in the Holy Spirit (16:09)—The Apostles’ Creed may seem to take a sudden turn in its train of thought in this session, but it backtracks a bit to fill in the gap between Jesus’ ascension in the past and His return in the future. What do we do in the meantime? While Christ is seated at the right hand of God, the Holy Spirit is active and present in each of His people. In fact, it’s by the Spirit that we can understand and apply the truths from this session.
  • Session 10: The Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of the Saints (11:04)—In this session Matt Chandler leads this time about how the church—as brothers and sisters in Christ—are united by faith in the Son and adopted by the Father Almighty. The Apostles’ Creed gives a unified voice to Christians around the world and throughout history. We’re a global family waiting for a heavenly home.
  • Session 11: The Forgiveness of Sins (12:43)—This session deals with the forgiveness of sins—the idea that when we put our faith in Jesus Christ, all of our sins are fully, freely, and forever forgiven in Christ. We’re justified through faith in Christ, once and for all. However, sanctification is an ongoing ethic of confession and repentance. We must continually be forgiven of our sins, and we must continually forgive those who sin against us.
  • Session 12: The Resurrection of the Body, and Life Everlasting. Amen. (11:18)—In this final session Matt Chandler focuses on the promise of resurrection and eternal life, and He discusses the idea that we are eternal creatures. As Christians we are going to experience ever increasing joy in our Savior and King for all eternity.
