(for group use viewing) featuring Jeff Vanderstelt. All 8 of these video sessions are available to purchase as individual, downloadable sessions. This 8-session Bible study gleans wisdom from the Book of Proverbs and from the example of Jesus to show you how to center your life on God’s priorities. You will examine the things that matter most to God and to you as a follower of Christ. Then you will learn to apply godly wisdom that will help you incorporate these activities into your busy life.
Session 1: Making Space [10:04]
Often when we read Proverbs, we’re looking for helpful nuggets to guide our busy lives. Many of the ways we try to conquer our chaotic lives are organization, rules, boundaries, and new technology. But Proverbs isn’t about us. It’s about the Lord. We can’t understand wisdom apart from knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. In this session Jeff Vanderstelt places wisdom within the context of the fear of the Lord.
Session 2: Money and Work [8:56]
One area in which people have difficulty fearing the Lord and surrendering their lives is money and work. God is interested in every part of our lives, including our work. In this session Jeff Vanderstelt applies the wisdom of God to our money and our work.
Session 3: Rest [10:04]
In this session Jeff Vanderstelt teaches about making space for rest in our lives. Making space for rest is important because it allows us to appreciate what God has done and prepares us to return to our work from a place of rest.
Session 4: Word and Prayer [8:20]
A wise person is teachable, is repentant, surrenders to God, and submits to God and others. One of the primary ways we express these characteristics in our lives is by reading Scripture and praying. In this session Jeff Vanderstelt focuses on the Word of God and prayer as sources of understanding and wisdom.
Session 5: Heart [11:24]
We’re not outside-in people but inside-out people. When we feel that something is wrong with us, most of try to fix the problem by doing. We change our schedule. We tell ourselves we’ll eat better, exercise more, or spend less time on our phones. But the problem isn’t any of those things; the problem is our hearts. In this session Jeff Vanderstelt applies the wisdom of Scripture to the state of our hearts
Session 6: Friendship [9:34]
In this session Jeff Vanderstelt teaches on making space for friendships. Wise friends are able to enter relationships that go below the surface. These types of friendships draw out the content of our hearts in the same way water is pulled from the deep recesses of a well.
Session 7: Parenting and Family [9:40]
We’re called to lead our children in following Jesus. In this session Jeff Vanderstelt teaches us how to do just that. As we lead, we’re an example of what it means to be a man or a woman for them. We don’t simply talk to them about God; we demonstrate a life lived close to God in repentance and faith. When we fail, we point to Jesus as the perfect Son, the true humanity.
Session 8: Hospitality [10:41]
In this final session, Jeff Vanderstelt teaches about welcoming strangers. Hospitality is making space for people to
be with us and to
become within community—to
be who they are and to
become more like Christ. Strangers are people who aren’t yet assimilated into our community. Hospitality means making space for strangers.
