(for group use viewing) featuring Matt Chandler. All 13 of these video sessions are available to purchase as individual, downloadable sessions. This 13-session Bible study provides a guided process for individuals and small groups to walk through the New Testament Book of James.
Session 1: Brother/Servant [24:10]
In this session Matt Chandler introduced us to the book of James and its author. James had a unique earthly relationship with Jesus, but his letter clarifies what the Christian life should look like for all believers. The Book of James is filled with practical wisdom, calling us to live out genuine faith through good works.
Session 2: Trials/Temptations [30:33]
In this session we encounter the first major theme of the book of James—how should we respond to trials as Christians. Matt Chandler teaches that as believers, we’ll face trials and temptations that test our faith and dependence on God. But enduring adversity ultimately brings joy.
Session 3: Hearer/Doer [28:15]
True belief causes Christians to live out their faith according to God’s Word. We don’t passively hear the Word. Rather, action should always follow genuine heart change. This session Beau Hughes teaches message on hearing and doing what God says.
Session 4: Judgment/Mercy [36:40]
If we aren’t careful, favoritism and preferential treatment begin to shape the way we treat others in the church. We sin when we show partiality to some people over others, whether they’re rich, poor, or different in any other way. In this session Matt Chandler teaches how believers should extend mercy rather than harsh judgment to others.
Session 5: Faith/Works [36:05]
This session is the core message of James. Matt Chandler works through James’s argument for why our actions and beliefs must line up with each other. Faith and works aren’t mutually exclusive. In fact, James tells us that faith apart from works is dead. Works don’t save us, but good works should follow true faith.
Session 6: Blessing/Curses [35:30]
We have countless opportunities throughout each day to use our words and to learn from our words. In this session Matt Chandler teaches about how our words can be either a blessing or a curse to the people around us. Believers must learn to control their tongues and use their words for good, not evil.
Session 7: False Wisdom/True Wisdom [36:40]
In this session Matt Chandler teaches how everything hinges on whether the standard by which we live is true or false. We can follow worldly wisdom that’s false or godly wisdom that’s true. We must examine every thought and deed by the Lord’s truth, the Word, and no other standard.
Session 8: Worldliness/Godliness [37:04]
Worldliness and godliness are both the root and the fruit of the wisdom we live by.
In this session Matt Chandler teaches how our passions and desires are at war within us, and we must fight against them. Pride, boasting, and divisiveness mark worldly people, while humility, obedience, and repentance mark godly people.
Session 9: Arrogance/Humility [33:51]
Our view of the future greatly influences where we place our assurance. James urges us to humbly view all of our days as being under the sovereign will of the Lord. In this session, Matt Chandler identified three ways to pursue humility, as well as ways to test whether we’re walking in arrogance.
Session 10: Oppressor/Laborer [39:00]
This session Matt Chandler continues teaching through James and calls us to look closely at our lives as he delves further into the money-hungry pride that’s a worldly stain on a person’s heart. James warned the rich who oppressed and exploited the underprivileged that riches would amount to nothing in the end. Instead, the humble and righteous would prevail.
Session 11: Suffering/Comfort [35:44]
All people, believers or not, will have to endure suffering. However, believers are to endure suffering with patience and steadfastness, keeping their eyes on the Lord. He’s compassionate and merciful to His children in every circumstance. In this session Matt Chandler examines a biblical perspective on suffering.
Session 12: Faithful/Faithless [39:26]
In this session Matt Chandler teaches about the prayer life of a believer. The prayers of the faithful are mighty. Believers should pray for one another in every circumstance—in sickness, health, suffering, and joy.
Session 13: Wanderer/Restorer [29:00]
In this final session Matt Chandler talks about our responsibility to restore wanderers. As Christians, we’re our brother or sister’s keeper. We must speak truth into other people’s lives and guide them back to the truth when they wander.
