What Does it Mean to be Holy?

Can we be holy by ourselves?
Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin, But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace though the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." Romans 3:20-24

Is "holier than thou" the same as holy?
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.'" Matthew 23:1-7

Can I be holy and still have an exciting life?
"I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:9-10

  • Having the mind of Christ. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:5)
  • Omitting self-importance. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. (Philippians 2:6-7)
  • Loving God more than life. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:8)
  • Yearning to see Christ. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

Lord, I accept Your Righteousness which makes me complete, new, sufficient, alive, and eternal. I choose this day to see the world as You see it. I choose this day to turn away from anything that could distort my identity in You. You are all I need.
