It allowed a time of sharing that wasn't threatening. The set-up with a candle and no interruptions was terrific, content was timely and relative, and my 15-year-old son shared that he felt valued and important because I took the time to do this with him. The fact that neither of us knew what we were going to discuss from day to day (the envelopes are sealed)put us on an even footing and made it intriguing. My son wanted me to add "It was very cool!" High praise from a teenager!

I am a youth minister. I do not have teenagers of my own but I suggested this resource to a couple of my youth parents. After the first week together with their teenager they were amazed! One parent in particular already had a close relationship with her son but this resource has helped them to connect on a deeper spiritual level that otherwise may have been unattainable. She has been able to hear her son pray meaningful and sincere prayers to our Father-much different from the prayers around the supper table. Her 15 year old son suggested near the end of the 30 days that they make a promise to one another to continue to meet together even beyond the 30 days. "30 Days: Turning the Hearts of Parents & Teenagers Toward Each Other" is a must for any youth ministry serious about building strong family relationships or for any parents serious about connecting with their teenager.

I wish you did not refer to the teen as a "student." It's impersonal. I'd rather you call them a teen.

I appreciated the non-threatening Qs that allowed my son and I to ease into some wonderful talks and self-revelation as the days moved along. I took my 18yr old son through this, and at first I wondered if the candle deal was hokey. About 21 days into it, I had to go on a 3 day work-trip, with a plan to follow the plan on the phone at 10pm each night. When I got home, my wife told me that at 10pm each night, my son went to the living room, sat "knee to knee" with the chair I usually sit in, and lit the candle while he and I talked on the phone to cover our cards. He revealed at the end how much he appreciated spending this time together, even though he was 18 yrs old at the time.
