Steve Owens has served as the minister of music at Harp's Crossing Baptist Church, Fayetteville, Georgia for over 13 years. He is the only full-time Music they have ever had.
He might be considered a short timer as Steve's pastor has been there 21 years, the minister of education for over 18 years, and the associate pastor for over 15 years.
Steve was asked about the factors that contributed to the staff remaining together and effective over the long haul.
1. Anticipated Longevity
I think from the beginning there was and always has been an expectation of being called here for life. Longevity was expected from the beginning; we will work through situations, not run from them. Until God moves us, we are here no matter what.
2. Trust
Trust is present between the staff both behind closed doors and in front of the congregation.
3. Transparency
Our pastor is extremely transparent with us, and I feel this has encouraged us to be even more transparent with one another.
4. Openness
We have a very open, sharing, but professional, personal relationship with one another.
5. Strong Self-Image
My pastor is not threatened by the music or my music position. Sometimes if a pastor is not secure emotionally and spiritually with himself and his relationship with the Lord, someone on the podium other than himself can be threatening.
6. Priority of Ministry
We are first and foremost allowed to be ministers to God's church and His people. What we do and are in charge of is secondary to being a minister.
We are not evaluated based on performance or productivity. It is not up to us to build God's church; it is up to us to create an atmosphere and provide ministries that will minister to and equip the people to grow.
Steve Owens is the minister of music at Harps Crossing Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Georgia.
