Has “must-see TV” become a literal phrase for you? Getting addicted to the idiot box is easier than you think. There are a variety of ways to reduce the pattern of plopping in front of the tube every night. Try these out and see the difference in your life.
1. Keep a log that details every show you watch for a week. Examining how much time you spend with the box can be the first step in cutting back.
2. Cut back to one set in the house. The more sets, the more opportunity for all household members to watch whatever they want whenever they want.
3. Move the set to an out-of-the-way place. Don’t make it the focal point of the living room. If it’s in an entertainment center, keep the doors shut.
4. Tape everything you want to watch for later viewing. That way you can skip objectionable material, including commercials.
5. Don’t watch just to have some noise. If a show isn’t any good, don’t keep watching, hoping it will get better.
6. Set a limit on the amount of time you’ll watch each day and stick to it. You’ll avoid the guilt that comes after watching more than you intended.
7. Watch with someone else to stay accountable. We look at programs alone that we wouldn’t consider otherwise.
8. Avoid channel surfing. When you lose interest in a show you’re watching, try turning the TV off rather than wasting time flicking through the stations to find something you like.
