Steps to Becoming a Good Spiritual Mentor

Written by Rosalie Campbell

This article is adapted from Woman to Woman Mentoring.

Mentoring is a one-to-one relationship that focuses on the needs of the mentored participant. It encourages that individual to develop to their fullest potential - spiritually and emotionally. Regardless of age, mature Christian women can be godly role models for other women. Mentoring can enrich the life of the mentor as well as the mentee.

As I learned more about mentoring and found myself in that role, I discovered the following list about being a good mentor in Janet Thompson's Woman to Woman Mentoring resource:

1. Be open to the call.
If you feel God's nudge to encourage and support another woman in her Christian walk, respond by making time in your schedule to be a mentor.

2. Develop skills.
Attend training sessions when available and learn good listening techniques.

3. Have daily quiet times.
Stay in a close relationship with God. As you grow in your spiritual life, you will be more effective as a mentor. God will direct your path in the mentoring relationship He calls you to.

4. Pray for wisdom.
Before you and your mentee meet, pray for guidance. Ask for God's grace so your words will be uplifting.

5. Attend church.
Be a godly role model. To be spiritually fit continue to worship God and feed on His Word. Do not neglect assembling with your church family.

6. Fellowship with other Christians.
Have support link. Connect with people that can uplift you. This can be done in a small group or Bible study. Be open to listening and learning.

7. Read books written by Christian authors on mentoring:

8. Compile a resource list.
Check with your pastor or other agencies for names and phone numbers of Christian counselors and Christ-centered support groups that assist individuals in working through painful emotional issues.
