Just for Fun

Looking for a quick activity or recipe? Here are some ideas just for fun. Whenever you plan to use food, plants, or animals as a teaching tool, it is vitally important to alert parents. At the room's entrance, always post an allergy alert to notify parents about the planned activities. Here is a free allergy alert poster that you can download and use anytime. Allergy Alert Poster

Animal Cracker Magnets
You’ll need:
• Animal crackers
• Markers
• Clear fingernail polish
• Self-adhesive magnetic tape

Steps:
• Choose animal crackers to decorate. Smooth crackers work best.
• Draw designs on your animals. Add eyes and other features. Use realistic colors to create a black and white striped zebra. Or make a tie-dyed lion or a flowered jungle cat!
• Paint one coat of clear nail polish onto the animals. Let them dry. Repeat with another coat.
• Cut a strip of self-adhesive magnetic tape. Attach to the back of each animal.
• Put your magnets on your refrigerator, school locker, or take them for a ride on your bike!

Extra Fun:
• Choose a favorite Bible verse. Write each word from the verse on a different animal. Mix the animals up and practice putting the verse in order.
• Make friendship magnets. Create two animals just alike. Give one to a friend.

Baggie Ice Cream Recipe
Use pint-sized and gallon-sized freezer bags.

Fill the smaller bag with the ice cream mixture:
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• Seal the bag

Fill the large bag half full of ice.
• Add 6 tablespoons salt.
• Put the sealed small bag into the large bag.
• Seal the large bag and shake for about 5 minutes until mixture looks like ice cream.
• Open the large bag and remove the smaller bag.
• Wipe bag off before opening.

Get a spoon and enjoy homemade ice cream in a baggie! Remind children to thank God for food and happy times together.

Disappearing Bird Feeder
You’ll need:
• A Plain Bagel
• String
• Peanut Butter
• Shortening
• Bird Seed

Steps:
• Slip the string through the bagel and tie a knot.
• Mix 1 tablespoon shortening with 2 tablespoons peanut butter.
• Spread the mixture onto the bagel.
• Roll the bagel in bird seed.
• Hang your bird feeder outside and watch it disappear!

Edible Play Dough
You'll need:
• 1 cup peanut butter
• 1 cup white corn syrup
• 1 cup powdered sugar
• 3 cups powdered milk

In a large bowl, mix peanut butter, corn syrup, and powdered sugar together. Add powdered milk and knead until smooth. (Add more powdered milk if needed.) Let kids mold the dough into any shape.

Peppermint Ice Cream
• Soften 1 quart vanilla ice cream.
• Crush 1 cup peppermint candy.
• Mix together thoroughly.
• Eat and enjoy or refreeze for later.

Peppermint Christmas Tree Ornament
• Cut a candy cane shape approximately 4 inches tall out of poster board.
• Spread glue on the shape.
• Sprinkle crushed peppermint candy on the shape and let it dry.
• Punch a hole at the top and tie with a ribbon.

Snowflake Fruit Snacks
You’ll need:
• 1 large marshmallow*
• A variety of fruits cut into small pieces
• Flaked coconut
• Miniature marshmallows
• 3 coffee stirring sticks, cut in half

Make kabobs by skewering miniature marshmallows and pieces of fruit onto each of six sticks. Push one end of each stick into the large marshmallow to create a snowflake shape. Sprinkle the entire snowflake with flaked coconut. Eat and enjoy!
*Caution: Before allowing your child to eat the large marshmallow, cut it into small pieces.
