Making Ethical Decisions

Wherever there are people and temptations, we’re likely to be confronted with an ethical dilemma. The workplace is no exception, whether it’s swiping office supplies or witnessing a coworker’s questionable actions. The following 10 questions can help you make better ethical decisions:

1. Is it legal? Consider all laws--local, state, and federal.

2. How will you feel about yourself? In the given situation, how will your attitude toward yourself be effected.

3. How do others feel? Talk to a trusted friend or coworker to get their opinion on the situation.

4. How would you feel if someone did the same thing to you? The Golden Rule is always the right standard.

5. If your actions were made public, how would you feel? If you don’t want coworkers, family, and friends to know, then it’s a sure bet the action isn’t ethical.

6. Does the behavior make sense? Will it hurt others? Will you or another person get caught eventually?

7. Will something negative happen if you don’t make a decision? Sometimes not taking action can result in harm to others.

8. Is it fair? Ethical decisions ensure that everyone’s best interests are protected.

9. Will people in authority approve? What would your manager or superior say? Get a manager’s opinion.

10. How will your Christian walk be effected?
