Writing Notes to Preschoolers

Preschoolers love getting mail that is just for them. Keeping in touch with your preschoolers through the mail lets the preschooler and the parents know how much you care.

Why?
The benefits of writing notes reach far beyond just making a child happy to receive mail. Notes are a great way to inform families about your class. Notes also serve to strengthen relationships with both children and parents. Today’s young families are among the busiest people anywhere; they want information that is quick and relevant. A short note written to a child can help parents participate in the learning that takes place in your classroom each week.

When?
The obvious occasions for writing notes are absences, illnesses, holidays, and birthdays. However, you have many other opportunities to send a card to a child. Consider sending notes to children who have just become big brothers or sisters. You might also send a note to a child who has lost his first tooth or when he goes on a trip. Preschoolers will be thrilled if you remember special events in their lives with a note. But even everyday events offer opportunities to let them know you care.

How?
Worried that you will not know what to write? Keep your notes short, simple, and personal. Try a few of the following suggestions:

  • Send a card just to let preschoolers know how much you enjoyed working puzzles with them last Sunday.
  • Use language the child will understand.
  • Be specific. Mention books or activities the child enjoys or has been involved in lately. Tell Jacob how you enjoyed reading to him on Sunday.
  • Include stories of recent events. A child who was absent will enjoy reading about what happened when the puppy visited your class last week.
  • Share information about upcoming activities. Let children know that you will be having a special snack on Sunday as you study about the little boy who shared his lunch with a crowd.
  • Highlight learning that is taking place in your class. Include a finger play, song, or Bible verse from your current unit and encourage children to learn it for Sunday’s session.
  • Include some of the child’s artwork or a photograph of a recent happening in Sunday School.

Include Bible Phrases

Send a note to a preschooler when you know she has done something great. Write:

Wow! You’re Wonderful!
Alyssa, I was happy to hear that you helped your mom with your little sister. The Bible says, “We are helpers" (2 Corinthians 1:24). Keep doing good!

Help preschoolers who visit your class for the first time know that you are glad they came. Write:

Guests are Great!
Angela, we are happy that you are our new friend. We look forward to seeing you again at church. The Bible says, “I like to go to church” (Psalm 122:1).

Remember to send a card to your preschoolers on their very own special day. Write:

Happy Birthday!
Jamal, I am so glad God made you special. Have a very happy birthday! The Bible says, “God made us” (Psalm 100:3).

Tell your preschoolers how wonderful it is that she has a new sibling at home. Write:

Siblings are Super!
Vanessa, it is great that you have a new baby brother. I can’t wait for you to bring some pictures to church. The Bible says, “Everything God made was very good” (Genesis 1:31).

Let your preschoolers know how much you miss them because they are sick. Write:

Sorry You’re Sick
Billy, sorry you are not feeling well. We look forward to seeing you at church soon! The Bible says, “God cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

Let your preschoolers know that you are thinking about them on those special days of the year. When writing, include a verse that teaches about the holiday. For Easter, write:

Happy Holiday!
Marta, Jesus is alive, and He loves you very much. Easter celebrates Jesus! The Bible says, “Jesus is alive” (Matthew 28:7).

Send a note to preschoolers to let them know that you are thinking about them. Write:

Just a Note!
Alexander, I love seeing you each week at church. I hope you are having fun with your mom and dad this week! The Bible says, “God gives us things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17).

It really does not matter why, when, or how you write notes to preschoolers. It only matters that you do. So get out the cards and get started.
