Proverbs 31 for Church Secretaries

Written by Colline B. Roney

A church secretary of noble character and patience, who can find? She is worth far more than the church can pay her, but her reward is in heaven. Her boss has full confidence in her and lacks nothing. She brings him good work, not bad -- even coffee -- all the days of the week.

She fills out purchase orders and forms and works with eager hands. She likes to brown-bag it, bringing her food from home. She gets up while it is still dark; she puts supper in the Crockpot™ because she has no servant girls.

She considers Sunday School supplies and buys them, but not out of her earnings. She sets about the church's work vigorously; her arms are strong for bulk mail outs. She sees that her computer is up-to-date and that the printer doesn't run out of paper.

In her hands she holds the telephone and grasps the pen with her fingers, always taking messages. She opens her arms to the children who come in, and extends her hands to change diapers. When it snows she has no fear; the office is open so she dresses warmly. She makes covers for her files; her reports are wrapped in clean folders, filed neatly.

Her boss is respected at staff meetings where he takes his seat among the other ministers. She makes tickets for banquets and sells them; she helps decorate, too. She is clothed in dresses of dignity, and can laugh at whatever comes to pass.

She speaks with wisdom and carries out faithful instruction to the volunteers. She watches over the budget of their ministry and does not spend unwisely. Her boss' wife and children call her blessed; her boss, also.

"Many secretaries do great things, but you surpass them all," he says.

Colline B. Roney is administrative assistant to the minister of education, Two Rivers Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn.
