They say you can’t swing a dead cat in Nashville without hitting a new singer/songwriter, and as the Lovin’ Spoonful so eloquently sang so many years ago, ‘and everyone of them will play a guitar better than I will.’ In a town where you can almost taste the musical talent in the water supply, coming across a new artist that blows the doors off of your expectations is an occasion for rejoicing. That being said, I want to introduce you to the music of Daniel Kirkley.
“Let Love Win,” Kirkley’s debut major label album (he has a couple of indie projects), is one of those rare projects that you can drop into your CD player and listen to with your mom and dad, your kids, or your believing and unbelieving friends. You can listen to it in the morning while you sip your coffee and prepare your spirit to take on the challenges of the day; you can listen to it in the cool of the evening after the kids are tucked in bed and you just need a few minutes to unwind. It even works for romantic, candlelit dinners.
The album opens with the magnificent, emotionally-charged piano ballad, “My New Dawn,” which will instantly connect with fans of mainstream crooner Josh Groban. “Heavenly” scooches the singer an inch closer to rock ‘n’ roll territory before segueing back to the solid pop of the title cut. Kirkley possesses one of those dramatic voices that could easily get out of control, but he manages to inject just the right amount of power, pathos, and zeal into each song without ever crossing the line into the self-indulgent and maudlin.
Best cuts include the invitational “Come;” the tender love song, “A Sacred Moment;” and the gently meandering “For the Life of Me.”
