FACING THE GIANTS is the new feature from Sherwood Pictures, a production company birthed out of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. After being overwhelmed by the response and international impact of Sherwood’s first movie, FLYWHEEL, the church decided to tackle a bigger project with southern football, humor, and faith inspiring themes. Michael C. Catt, senior pastor at Sherwood, and Jim McBride, executive pastor, supported the vision for another movie believing that this "out of the box" approach to ministry could produce positive results around the world. With no fund-raising, the huge undertaking was supported by private donations from Sherwood members. The church rallied together in prayer and volunteered their time and talents for the new venture. Whereas FLYWHEEL had enlisted the help of a small group of volunteers, the story of FACING THE GIANTS would require hundreds of workers and extras. None of the actors were paid as the majority of the cast and crew were volunteers with no prior experience.
Because of their unique availability, retired senior adult men, stay-at-home moms, and home schooled teenagers primarily compiled the working crew to operate the set during the six weeks of shooting. Locations for the movie were donated by local residents, businesses, and schools. All ages were involved as Sunday school classes cooked meals and became the "caterers" to the crew each day. Training the volunteers and facilitating the production was a hired team of five professionals, Director of Photography Bob Scott, Assistant Director David Nixon, Gaffer Keith Slade, Production Sound Mixer Rob Whitehurst, and 1st AC Chip Byrd. Having been inspired by FLYWHEEL, this team agreed to join the adventure and help the church tell the story of FACING THE GIANTS with production excellence. The movie was shot with one high definition Panasonic Vericam Camera and edited on a PowerMac G-5 computer using Final Cut Pro HD software.
An exciting addition to the cast came when University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt volunteered to fly down from Athens and do a cameo appearance in the movie. Mark’s huge popularity in Georgia and respected reputation as a man committed to faith and football made him an ideal addition to the story’s themes. FACING THE GIANTS was written and produced by Alex and Stephen Kendrick, brothers and associate pastors at Sherwood Baptist Church. Their goals were to produce a family friendly movie that could be affordably shot in Albany, would be fun to watch, impactful to viewers, and glorifying to God. "I believe there is a huge culture of people who love movies, but leave theaters disappointed by films with profanity, immorality, and messages that trample their family’s values and faith," said Stephen Kendrick. "FACING THE GIANTS is the type of movie we’ve been longing to see in the theater and own on DVD. Like FLYWHEEL, we believe viewers will laugh, cry, and be inspired by the characters and truths interwoven in the story." After great reviews from four test screen audiences, FACING THE GIANTS is being prepared for a theatrical release in 400 theaters on September 29th, 2006. |
