Why Did I Not Hear From Anyone Concerning My Application?

You were so prepared.  You gathered all your employment information including dates of employment, supervisor names, addresses, and phone numbers, and you feel you completed the best online application ever.  So why no phone call, letter, email...anything? After all, “This job was made for me”!

For many years recruiters only had the paper application and your typed resume to review and learn all they could about you.  But now, with the click of a mouse, they can find out more about you than they need or ever want to know.  You may think the ever so popular social networking web sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter are only being used as communication tools among friends but these web sites are also a very resourceful tool for company recruiters.

Even before going to the internet and searching your name, have you thought about what your email address may say about you?  Or what about your voice message on your cell or home phone?  Would the person calling get a good first impression of you from what they hear you say?  Yes, these things could be all in fun or in a joking manner, but even jokes can say a lot about a person.

How about your email address - what does it say about you?  For your company would you want to hire Lazyfromjail@ or OneSexylady@ or Workstinks@?!  You are probably laughing by now but unfortunately recruiters see email titles such as these happening more and more.  Does your email reflect the image you want your employer to have of you?  An unconventional email address can definitely be held against you when it comes to applying for a job. Choose the name wisely, one that will best describe you as a person in a positive light.  Or stick with a conventional email address using your first and last name – you can’t go wrong using that!

You’ve heard about first impressions when you arrive for the interview, but now in this ever changing world of technology first impressions come long before the face to face interview.  Have you searched your name on the internet lately, really looked at your email address to see what it may say about you, or listened to your own voice mail message to hear how it may portray you?  If not, maybe this will be a reminder for you to review all these things about yourself before seeking employment or completing the online application.  Will a prospective employer see a responsible and upstanding individual or one that screams go on to the next application?
