Congratulations!
CONGRATULATIONS! This is a word we hear a lot this time of year. Graduations, weddings, babies, and other happy occasions are all causes for us to use this word. A congratulation seems to be associated with “new beginnings” or the anticipation of a new beginning. We assume that college graduates are ending a season of study and embarking on a new career. This is almost always the case. However, in these difficult economic times, it can be very hard to get into the career for which you have prepared. Even though times are tough, don’t give up. There are many things you can do to improve your chances of getting that perfect job.
Polish your resume. This is the time to get that resume polished to be the best representation of you and what you have to bring to a prospective employer. Your resume will go before you to many employers. Make sure that it is informative enough to help you get your foot in the door that may lead to an interview.
Networking is a great way to find a job. Use all of your resources to get your resume to as many employers as possible in your field. There are many ways to search for jobs today. There are job search sites, such as Career Builder, Monster, as well as specialty web sites that list job postings for very specific career fields. You can use a search engine, such as Google and search for jobs in your field of study. Social Network sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are great places to search for jobs. Use these sites to get the word out to your friends that you are job hunting and let them know exactly what you are looking for. Your friends can be very helpful when it comes to finding the right job.
Prepare yourself for the interview. There are many qualified people out there trying to get the same job you are trying to get. Once you get that interview, do all you can to make sure that the person interviewing you is convinced that you are the right person for the job. Dress for a successful interview. Present yourself as a professional. Sit up straight and tall, speak up and speak well. Turn off your cell phone and give your undivided attention to the person interviewing you. Research the company online and learn as much as you can about the company as well as the job. Be prepared to ask questions during the interview. Be yourself during the interview and be honest. Remember, you are interviewing for a job that you have never had before. You won’t know all of the answers to questions about the specific job, but be as informed about the position and company as possible before going to the interview.
Let them know that you want the job and that YOU are the person they are looking for. Show them enthusiasm, excitement, energy and a positive attitude. Good luck in your job hunt and CONGRATULATIONS, your new job is just around the corner.
