Using Social Networks in Your Job Search

Where do you begin your job search? The world of job hunting has changed significantly in recent years hasn’t it?

Remember the days when a job search was simply submitting a resume in response to help-wanted ads, a referral, or even being approached by a headhunter?

Today much of the recruitment process begins with the internet. Job seekers and recruiters now find that by utilizing on-line social networks, they can achieve the combined goal of finding the right employee and being hired. It is for this reason that the understanding of social networks is beneficial if you are actively or even passively seeking employment.

Let’s look now at this new and virtually untapped resource.

What are on-line social networks?

On-line social networks are similar to traditional social networks in they offer space on the internet for individuals with similar interests or philosophies to share ideas, insights, and potentially help one another achieve desired goals. In the past, you may have joined professional organizations or community groups to achieve this type of networking experience. In recent years, we have seen the migration of these organizations and groups to the internet which affords people from around the world the opportunity to network and expand their sphere of influence.

What can social networks do for me?

Not only are social networks great for catching up with old friends, they are great for helping you find employment. Many recruiters now spend time searching social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and LinkedIn to interact and recruit new job candidates through these networks.

If the traditional means of identifying job opportunities haven’t worked for you, it may be in your best interest to join one or more on-line social networking sites. These sites provide the opportunity for you to post your resume or background information that will offer insight into your qualifications and interests. Once your information has been posted, you may then seek invitations to connect with not only individuals but groups with similar interests and backgrounds including companies of interest.

Social Networking Etiquette

Involvement and participation with on-line social networks to identify potential job opportunities also carry with it a great amount of personal responsibility. If your purpose for joining an on-line social network is to be noticed by recruiters, you should be aware of your actions or risk projecting an unprofessional image. To avoid this from happening, you should refrain from posting pictures or comments that could potentially project an image that could disqualify you from further consideration.

What now?

The opportunities to secure employment through the click of a mouse are better than ever.  So before you print off your next resume or attend the next job fair, consider joining a professional on-line social network. You may find that your next opportunity is only a click away!
