Book Review: ‘The Gulps’

Written by Paula K. Parker

“The Gulps”
By Marc Brown and Rosemary Wells
Little, Brown Young Readers

Meet the Gulps. They are a family of bunnies who love junk food – corn dogs, cheesy fries, Winky-Twinks. If it's frozen, fried, or ultra-sized – they want it. As you might guess, this is a family of chubby bunnies whose idea of exercise is reaching into the cabinet for another bag of chips. All except for little sister Dawn that is, who prefers healthy foods and playing in the fresh air.

When the Gulps decide to go on vacation, they load up their American Dreamliner with all their favorite junk food, along with three televisions and assorted video games, and head off for Dizzyworld. Everything is going along smoothly, including their favorite shakes (Dawn's is made from carrots) when the American Dreamliner stops on a country road. No amount of coaxing or tweaking helps. No one knows why the recreational vehicle has stopped; except for Dawn. She tells the family their vehicle is tired of carrying such a heavy load of bunnies.

About that time, a friendly farmer bunny comes along and invites the Gulps to supper. But instead of pizza and deep-fried goodies, they are served garden fresh vegetables. The Gulps have never seen, much less tasted, fresh food and they all go to bed hungry; except for Dawn. The next morning, they try to help around the farm. But alas, they can't climb ladders, can't bend over to gather eggs, and can't pick up baskets of green beans. When a trip with the farmer family to the county fair results in disaster, Dawn announces that it's time the Gulp family learns to eat healthier and exercise more.

Marc Brown, creator of the bestselling 'Arthur Adventure' series, along with acclaimed author Rosemary Wells, have written a delightful picture book that encourages young children and parents alike to pursue a healthier lifestyle.
