Music Review: 'I Believe in You' by Joel Engle
I Believe in You
By Joel Engle
Spin 360
It’s easy to categorize any current album that has elements of adoration, exhortation, and exhilaration as being a praise and worship album. As such, “I Believe in You,” the latest project from prolific singer/songwriter Joel Engle, could easily fall into that category. With lyrics like: “I lift my heart/I lift my hands/Your word is life” from the title cut and “Jesus, King of Kings/I will worship, fall down on my knees/Raise my voice and sing” from “If I Don’t Bring You Glory,” you could certainly be forgiven for thinking so.
But “I Believe in You” is a whole lot more than just another entry into the burgeoning praise and worship market. It is more of a modern day Psalmistry, jam-packed with scriptural phraseology packaged in pop-rock melodies that make them easy to sing along with. “O Great God” could easily find its way into the hymnals of countless churches across the country, while “You Are The Holy One” has the chops to camp out on Christian radio charts for weeks on end.
Already known as an author, speaker, entertainer, entrepreneur, and all around Renaissance guy, Engle might take exception at being categorized as a worship artist, but he’ll probably just have to get used to it. Like fellow worship artists Tim Hughes, Charlie Hall, and David Crowder, Joel Engle is a preacher at heart who manages to make weighty theological issues both comprehensible and assessable through his music. And it doesn’t hurt that he has a radio-friendly voice and sings in a key that most folks can reach. Roll down the windows and crank up the stereo. This is some good music.
