Music Review: ‘Iris to Iris’ by Building 429

Written by Mike & Paula K. Parker

“Iris to Iris”
By Building 429
Word Records

On their third outing, Building 429 has finally admitted what their fans have known for years – they are a worship band. With previous worship anthems like “Glory Defined,” “The Space In Between Us,” and “I Believe” you have to wonder why it took the band so long to figure it out. Whatever the reason, the 10 songs on their latest project, “Iris to Iris,” are easily among the best the band has ever produced.

It’s not that Building 429 has reinvented the worship wheel or anything. Rather, “Iris to Iris” is a sturdy collection of impeccably crafted pop-rock tunes wrapped around honest, heart-felt lyrics that compel you to sing along, and somehow they work their way into your heart and soul.

A classic example of the band’s uncanny ability to draw fresh emotion from a maudlin and overused reference point is the stellar worship ballad, “You Carried Me.” Reminiscent of the painfully ubiquitous poem, “Footprints in the Sand,” this song still manages to take you on a journey of faith and faithlessness and somehow reminds you of the timeless truth that ‘mercy covers all.’

Frontman Jason Roy connected with British superstar songwriter Chris Eaton to produce some of the album’s most memorable moments. “Power of Your Name” opens with a tangle of jangly guitars before blending intense, emotion-laden lyrics over a bed of laid-back grooves that provide a perfect base for Jason’s southern rock vocals. And their collaboration on “Singing Over Me” produces a melody so supple that it is instantly sing-along-able.

“Iris to Iris” is a compelling collection of new rock worship songs that will please old fans with its southern rock sensibilities, and it should make a whole bevy of new fans who like rock ‘n’ roll that exalts the Rock.
