LifeWay Invites You to Discover Your Potential

Written by LifeWay.com staff

Are you being called by God to service as a Sunday School teacher? Not sure exactly what that means? Through a nine-part series, LifeWay invites you to discover your potential. Covering five general topics on ministry in the Sunday School and four specific age-group areas, Discovering My Potential will guide you in finding your place of leadership. Each session is between 20-40 minutes in length. All nine sessions come as one package and are only $19.95!

System requirements: an internet browser and the latest version of Macromedia Flash. A broadband internet connection is optimal but not required for viewing.

Visit the Discovering My Potential product page.

Topics include:

  • Session 1: Recognizing God's Call to Service - Barry Campbell
Calls from God are not issued at random, but each person is specifically chosen and called by God for His purpose.  How has God prepared your life for His service? How do you become aware of God’s calling for service to your church? In calling a person to service, God most desires the person, not what the person can do. God has expectations of those whom He calls. Those expectations include: faithfulness, obedience, sacrifice, service, commitment, preparation. Constant communion with God is critical to effectiveness in living out one’s calling from God.

  • Session 2: The Mission of the Sunday School - David Francis
Foundational to effective service in Sunday School is understanding it purpose and a desire in your heart to engage others in helping it accomplish its purpose.

  • Session 3: Traits of Life Changing Teaching - Wayne Poling
In its purest sense Sunday School is seeking to see lives transformed: people coming to know Christ as Savior and then giving their lives to Him to be used by Him. What are the characteristics of life changing teachers? What are key characteristics of teaching that changes lives? How can teaching best impact the lives of a variety of learners?

  • Session 4: Teaching Preschoolers in Sunday School - Ann Edwards
  • Session 5: Teaching Children in Sunday School - Bill Emeott
  • Session 6: Teaching Student’s Sunday School - Sherry Spillman
  • Session 7: Teaching Adults in Sunday School - John McClendon

Each of these sessions are designed to help the potential Sunday School teacher understand the

  1. characteristics of the particular age group,
  2. how that age group learns most effectively,
  3. goals in teaching that age group (in example Biblical concept areas with preschoolers and children),
  4. effective teaching methods and activities with that age group.

A downloadable observation sheet will be provided to each participant. Each participant will be encouraged to make arrangements to observe in the particular age group the next Sunday after they complete the session.

  • Session 8 - The Sunday School Reaching and Ministering - Alan Raughton
Why is the Sunday School the church’s most effective tool for reaching and ministering? How does a Sunday School organize for and implement outreach? Why is it important for a leader to have a heart for reaching people for Christ, the church, and Bible study? Why is it important for a leader to have a heart for assimilating people and ministering to them effectively? How can the Sunday School most effectively assimilate people and minister to them.

  • Session 9: The Life of an Effective Leader - David Apple
Being an effective leader is not simply learning a set of skills. It is built upon a dynamic, growing relationship with Jesus Christ. An effective leader not only teaches through what he/she shares in class, but also the life he/she lives. During this session participants will explore disciplines/ways through which an effective leader strengthens his/her daily walk.
