Halloween Decorating Alternatives, Part 2

Written by Chuck Guthrie

Let’s talk spooky stuff! What do you do for the kid who’s just gotta have a little more than fall décor? Here are some things to consider – especially if you have boys or your husband is a little boy at heart.

Go ahead and carve your pumpkin if you must, but do it with a purpose. Carve the name JESUS in the pumpkin or carve a cross. If you carve faces, then write on it with a black marker or put a little sign in front that says, “Let your light shine before men,” Matthew 5:17. Teach your child how Jesus’ light should shine through us to the dark world.

Create a cemetery with tombstones in the front yard. Instead of just R.I.P., put “Ready for Rapture,” “Here Lies Bob’s Body but His Spirit is in Heaven,”  “I Was Ready to Meet Jesus – Are You?” You get the idea! Come up with several to serve as effective witnessing tools in your neighborhood.

Create a sign with Proverbs 15:30, “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.” Place it beside a smiling skeleton.

Fake spiders and webs can be fun. Decorate a 'treasure chest' with plastic spiders and cotton spider webbing. Make a sign that reads, “Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal," Matthew 6:19 (Holman Christian Standard Bible).

If you plan to give out treats to trick-or-treaters, why not give a little tract or note that says “Jesus Loves You” to go along with the candy? Halloween is a great night to invite people to visit your church or teach them about your Lord.

God’s Word tells us to be in the world and not of the world. Only you can determine how involved your family will be during what the world calls Halloween. Some say it’s the devils day. God’s Word says in Psalm 118:24, “This is the day that the Lord has made.” Choose to rejoice and be glad in it!

Chuck Guthrie’s heart is to present home decorating and improvement ideas with the ever-present theme of Jesus Christ’s lordship in the home.
