The Gift and the Giver - A Dramatic Reading
A Dramatic Reading to Illustrate Biblical Giving
Running time: 2 minutes

|||||
Characters: Two people of either gender.
Props: Two offering plates
Synopsis: Two people share their very different views of giving.
Performance hints: Lines are to be delivered directly to the audience. Work on saying lines so there are no pauses or hesitations as one actor begins his lines and the other finishes and so that lines together are simultaneous. Work on sounding natural, as if the other person were not there. This will take some extra practice to perfect.
Two actors stand downstage center, several feet apart. They do not acknowledge each other during the sketch. Place the offering plates downstage left and right.
1 & 2: It’s the
1: best time
2: worst time
1 & 2: of the week.
1: I look forward to this all week long.
2: All week long I just cringe whenever I think of it.
1: Whenever I think of it, I get goose bumps because I’m so excited.
2: When am I gonna be able just to keep some for me?
1: For me, this is one of the best parts of being a Christian. It just isn’t an option.
2: It just isn’t an option. I feel so obligated. Like I don’t have a choice in the matter.
1: As a matter of fact, I’d do it even if I weren’t supposed to.
2: If I weren’t supposed to do it, then I probably wouldn’t.
1: I get a kick out of seeing all the good it does. It makes me feel like I’m doing something important.
2: Doing something important with it. That’s what I’d really like. But I’m stuck. Somebody might find out I wasn’t doing my part.
1: Doing my part is the least I can do. If somebody else didn’t do it before me, I’d hate to think where I’d be now.
2: I hate to think where I’d be now if I hadn’t been doing this so long. I’d be a lot further along in life.
1: I really don’t want anybody to know how much I do it. That would take the joy out of it for me.
2: The joy in all this for me comes from being able to make a big deal out of it. I mean,
why not let other people pat you on the back? I mean,
1 & 2: I’m a good person.
2: So why not flaunt it?
1: But not nearly as good as the One who gave to me.
2: No one gave to me. So, I’m going above and beyond in giving to someone else.
1: Giving to someone else is my way of saying, “Thank You.” I only wish I could give more.
2: Give more! More, more, more! That’s all I hear!
1: I hear people pray that God would bless the gift and the giver.
2: Bless the gift and the giver. I hear that every week, too. Well, bless me, Lord, ’cause this giver has given his fair share of gifts.
1: Gift. My whole life is a gift. Now I want to be a giver—my time, my talents, my money. I’m really grateful for this opportunity.
(Both actors move to the offering plate nearest them and pick them up.)
1 & 2: I’ll give, all right.
2: But I won’t like it.
1: And I pray that God will take what I can give and use it to spread His love to those who need it most.
(Both freeze.)
