Wow Them with Missions-Oriented Preschool Books!

Written by Rhonda R. Reeves

The Woman's Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist Convention produces a variety of beautifully illustrated books that church libraries can offer for all ages of preschoolers (birth – pre-first grade). These fun-filled books are guaranteed to WOW the preschoolers as they gain awareness that they can be more like Jesus by helping others, praying for others, giving, sharing, and doing missions.

With simple text and big, bold, colorful illustrations, the “Missions and Me” Series focuses on Christian concepts that provide a strong foundation for faith development in preschoolers. These books include: Tell Me About God (2nd place winner of the Baptist Communicators Association Wilmer C. Fields Awards Competition); I Can Help Others; Thank You, God, for My Bible; Families Are Special; I Like to Go to Church; Good Things Jesus Did; Myself; God’s Beautiful World; In My Community; and Around the World.

From the “I Can” series, a preschooler follows the story of Juan Carlos in I Can Give as his family helps him learn about the importance of giving. Preschoolers will have fun repeating the simple Spanish phrases on each page. I Can Do It! is a delightful book about a Chinese American child named Meiying who learns how she can do missions. Chinese phrases on each page will challenge preschoolers as they learn what these phrases mean. I Can Pray tells how a little girl named Abby discovers that she and her family can pray at any time, anywhere. In each book in this series, Bible thoughts and activities inspire and motivate preschoolers and their families to know that they can be active participants in missions.

More Alike Than Different by Carolyn Ross Tomlin leads preschoolers as well as young children to follow Matthew throughout his neighborhood as he plays with many children from all over the world. Together the children learn how they are more alike than different.

The Lottie and Annie Upside-Down Book by Cara Lynn Vogel will help preschoolers learn more about two well-known women who worked to help people know more about Jesus. After a child holds the book and hears the story of Lottie Moon who served in China, he then can turn the book upside down to hear about Annie Armstrong who worked in North America. Throughout the book, preschoolers learn what these women did to help others. Hands-on learning experiences at the end of both sections help preschoolers find out what they can do to help.
