Extra! Sermons for December 2009 - "The Isaiah Oracles" - Four Christmas season messages by Lloyd Stilley

These sermons relate to the theme of the Bible Studies for Life series for December: "God’s Christmas Songs."
Music has a way of touching the deepest level of who we are as humans. Christmas music is no exception. Christmas music is a reminder that God invaded the earth in Christ to meet our deepest needs as people. This study will focus on four different passages that reflect the songs God has orchestrated to remind His people that He is the ultimate supplier of human needs.

  • December 6  - Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus (Micah 5:1-5a; 7:18-20)
  • December 13  - Joy to the World (Luke 1:46-55)
  • December 20  - Go, Tell It on the Mountain (Luke 1:67-79)
  • December 27  - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Philippians 2:5-11)

About Pastor's EXTRA!

Pastor's EXTRA! is designed to help you build a worship experience around the same theme used in the "Adult Bible Studies for Life," a popular small-group Bible study curriculum. We provide free model sermons (full manuscripts) to help you strengthen and encourage your Sunday School teachers from the pulpit and to help you develop your preaching around the small-group Bible study ministry of your church.

Download the Bible Studies for Life Study Plans 2008-09

Our commitment to you is to provide a model sermon with illustrations while avoiding the use of the same lesson title and text that your Sunday School teachers are using. We try to include an explanation at the beginning of each sermon to show how it is related to that week's Adult Bible Studies for Life lesson.

For questions about EXTRA, contact Craig Webb, editor. Get weekly updates of the latest Pastor's EXTRA! Sermons through the free Pastors Today eNewsletter from LifeWay.

EXTRA! sermons for May 2009 - Building Lasting Relationships (Based on the Old Testament book of Ruth)
by Jerry Gifford

Pastor's EXTRA! is designed to help you build a worship experience around the same theme used in the "Adult Bible Studies for Life," a popular small-group Bible study curriculum. During the five Sundays in May 2009 adults using Bible Studies for Life will be looking at "Profiles in Character." The Bible provides readers with a host of illustrations of how people responded in various situations - both good and bad. Believers need good examples to follow. By looking at various events in the lives of selected men and women of the Bible we can learn important lessons that will help us develop in our faith, in our Christian character, and in our walk with God before the world.

This sermon series is based on the biblical characters in the book of Ruth. You might consider using these sermons beginning on Mother's Day (May 10) and ending on Father's Day (June 21).

Sermons for January 2009. Series title: "Lean Times" (by Pastor Andy Cook)

Series summary: Millions of Americans find themselves facing the greatest struggles of their lives today, squeezed financially by rising energy costs, rising unemployment rates, fears of a national recession – or even a depression. The housing market has changed dramatically, dramatic stock market losses have taken huge bites out of once-healthy retirement accounts, and credit that was once easily obtained is suddenly in a lock-down mode. In addition, a new presidential administration means more change is on the way, and no one is certain where the change will lead. It adds up to a shocking new way of life: These are “Lean Times.”

Sooner or later, it’s going to happen to you. Someday, calamity will come crashing into your life. Sometimes there is a forewarning; sometimes it just explodes under your feet. But we all must take our turn at it. Life can go from zero to panic attack in seconds, wrenching from your grasp anything resembling normal. The question is, in that moment, what will you do? What does Isaiah see and say about God and what do we need to know today.

Sermon manuscripts are available here.

  1. The Lord, He is God, Isaiah 6
  2. The Bible is God's Word to Me, Psalm 19
  3. I Am a Sinner Who Needs a Savior, Ephesians 2

Sermon Series Introduction:  Like a caterpillar that goes through metamorphosis, Christians are meant to change! In fact, this transformation should leave us looking and acting just like Jesus! If this is the full expectation of the New Testament, why do so many professing Christians settle for more like the world than the Savior? Tired of mediocre Christianity? Get ready; things are about to change!
