Make Super Sunday a Winning Outreach Event

Free Download Super Natural Bowl - Worship Drama PDF (PDF)

Does your church attendance traditionally lose to the football game on Super Sunday? Why not host a Super Sunday Celebration, and gather as a church to watch the game? A viewing party for the big game can encourage fellowship among members and reach non-Christians who might never come for a regular service.

1. Make It Different

Make your Super Sunday Celebration different from your normal Sunday worship service. Gather in your fellowship hall, Christian life center, in church members' homes, or in another setting that would be less threatening to non-Christians than your sanctuary.

Have church members bring guests who aren't members, or invite the community at large. You may want to invite other churches in your area and have a great time with people of other denominations and cultures.

Make sure everyone who comes will be able to see the game by using a large-screen or projection TV. If your church or a church member doesn't have the equipment, you can usually rent it from electronics stores.

Next, plan for a snack supper or refreshments to be available beginning 30 minutes before kickoff and throughout the entire game.

2. Include Everyone

Remember to include activities for people who aren't interested in the game so that the whole church will want to come. Set aside a special area for board games. Provide crafts for children or host special sessions of their regular Sunday evening activities. Also, if you have your Super Sunday Celebration in your fellowship hall and have a Christian life center, reserve the latter for basketball or volleyball.

Commercials are a memorable part of the televised game, so assign church organizations "commercial time" for their upcoming projects. Advertise marriage enrichment or other discipleship courses, mission trips, youth fund-raisers, or other events. "Air" them live or recorded beforehand. Use a VCR and a small TV to act as a monitor to avoid missing any of the game. If you run out of commercials, play Christian music videos.

Plan for halftime to be a time for a devotional thought, prayer time, and an opportunity to share Christ with those who may not know Him. Your pastor may wish to speak at this time or lead a mini-service. If there are multiple fellowships in members' homes, provide a devotional for the host to present or play a videotaped message from the pastor.

Provide information cards for guests to complete. You can follow-up with home visits the next week to help with any needs expressed on the cards.

3. Be Creative

Be sure to tailor your Super Sunday Celebration to best meet the needs of your congregation and community. You may want to:

  • Have a tailgate party before the game.
  • Set up refreshment booths where tickets may be redeemed for snacks and drinks. Tickets might sell for 50 cents each, with a soft drink going for one ticket, popcorn for two tickets, a slice of pizza for three, and so on.
  • Ask for donated snacks to use at a concession stand. Allow the youth to operate the stand as a fund-raiser for their upcoming mission trip or choir tour.
  • Hold drawings for prizes during the commercials. Draw for a grand prize at the end of halftime.
  • Divide your fellowship hall into areas, using one for the game, one for board games, and one for young children. Open up the room at halftime so that everyone can participate in the mini-service.
  • Provide comfortable chairs, or allow people to bring their favorite to sit in during the game, to make them feel "at home."
  • Allow people to bring trading cards and sports memorabilia to display.
  • Have an early service before the game and then move to the fellowship hall for the celebration.
  • Have a churchwide lunch after your regular Sunday morning schedule, then offer a special study that is followed by snacks and the game.
