How to Enroll Adults in Sunday School Classes

Written by Richard E. Dodge

Think about this statement for a moment: Words are mere symbols of what has real meaning.

Communication specialists often describe words as symbols of what is real. Words are arbitrary. For example, in English, the cool, wet stuff we drink to quench our thirst is called water. In Spanish, it's agua. Same substance, different words.

Consider another example: the cross. Until Jesus was nailed to one, the cross had little meaning other than to represent extreme pain and suffering. Now the cross is a symbol of victory for Christians.

Words don't always convey the intended meaning. Reality often is experienced in the actions we take; words may fall short of making a difference in someone’s life. Only actions sometimes send the right message. Thus we must become more conscious of the actions we demonstrate to and for others. Consider ways to put meaning into concrete actions.

Enrollment is one symbol that comes to mind. For some, enrollment is a mechanical process representing numerical growth or forced commitment to an institution. But when emphasized with the right motives and actions, enrolling unchurched people in a Bible study group represents expressions of love and concern for people. Enrollment:

  • expresses our love for God
  • places responsibility on members, not newcomers
  • means we minister to one of our own
  • helps people feel part of the group
  • increases participation
  • increases the chances of salvation
  • says we are interested in people
  • increases the chances we will stay in touch

Enrollment is every member’s responsibility. Each person should be encouraged to become an agent of change ... change brought by the love and concern of people who know Jesus and have made a commitment to serve Him. Led by the class outreach-evangelism leader, each class should make plans and take actions that intentionally communicate the love of Christ through those who attend your class. Consider some actions that will help reach adults and their families.

  • Review visitor registration information or prospect assignment cards to get addresses and personal information.
  • Remove the word visitor from our vocabulary. Replace it with newcomer or friend.
  • Ask every class member to enroll one person. Provide a name to every member who does not have someone in mind to enroll.
  • Ask each member to make an appointment with and visit the prospect.
  • Provide tips for how to enroll people.
  • Ask members to pick up people whom they visit on the Sunday following their visit.
  • Celebrate every new member enrolled.
  • Assign each new member to a ministry team or leader for immediate follow-up.
  • Involve new members in the life of the class and the lives of different members.

Take time to enroll people who are prospects or newcomers to your Bible study group and your church. Enrollment is another one of those words that can have great meaning, even though the definition may be misunderstood or ignored. Think about these reasons for enrolling people.
