Building Traditions with Preschoolers

Written by Tommy Sanders

Christmas is a great time to help preschoolers and their families begin important traditions. Here are some ideas to help make that a reality:

  • Help parents and teachers separate the secular from the sacred. Santa can be a great tradition, but preschoolers need separate times to focus on Christ's birth. Mixing the focus of secular and sacred is very confusing. Do both well, but do them separate. Home can be a place for both, but church should focus completely on the Advent of Christ.
  • Provide non-breakable or wooden nativity scenes for use in preschool rooms.
  • Collect used Christmas cards to use in a collage or as mini teaching pictures.
  • Provide an extra time on Friday night or Saturday morning with preschoolers for parents to shop.
  • Provide well-written Bible stories about Christmas for parents to use at home. Learner Guides are the best resource for parents.
  • Provide outdated teaching pictures for families to use at home.
  • Introduce the concept of "advent" wreath, but focus on the Prophet's Candle, Bethlehem Candle, Shepherd's Candle and the Angel Candle.
