Session: Adults and Learning
Preparation
- Ask teachers to bring their teaching guides to this session.
Reflect and Practice
- Open the session with prayer.
- Ask, "How do you see your group of adults experiencing learning:
a calling or
a journey?" (p. 56-57)
- Ask participants to pair off. With their partners ask them to identify how
to use reflection in the next lesson or session with their learners. You are
asking them to reflect on what they read in the article
"Ways Adults Learn"
then practice the art of reflection during the next session with their adult
learners. If you have general church leaders in your group, discuss ways to
use reflection in their leadership meetings.
- As a group, identify tips for using
reflection opportunities with their
adult learners. Some of their tips may come from their experiences with this
study.
- Ask your participants to review their list of group members. Say, "Analyze
your experiences with each person. Do any of his or her behaviors indicate
a learning disability?" As a group, discuss the strategy and organizational
instruction approach. Ask, "How does this approach complement
reflection?"
- Conclude the session by discussing the implications of how adults learn
to the ways teachers teach and lead adults. Ask, "How can you create
an environment where adults expect to learn something when they come to church?"
- Close the session with a season of prayer asking God to guide the teachers
and leaders to guide them to focus on learning more than teaching. Remind
your participants to read the section for the next session.
