Money in Marriage: God's Principles or Yours?
Can dealing with money - the lack of or abundance of - affect a marriage? Yes, it certainly can! Over the years, we have heard and seen couples struggle financially in many different ways. Did you know the affluent struggle with money as much as those who have little? The struggles are different, of course, but they happen.
A major reason for divorce
It is so important that we be in control of our money instead of it controlling us. A few years ago, we participated in a discipleship program designed by Crown Financial Ministries. It helped us greatly - more than we could have ever imagined.
This New Year, why not resolve to get help with your financial situation? Maybe you and your spouse are struggling with terrible marriage problems, bankruptcy, or even contemplating divorce because of money issues. God's Word reminds us in 1 Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil," (HCSB).
Money: good or bad?
Did you know that your attitude toward money reflects your attitude toward God?
Money itself is not bad. But our attitude toward money, and our use of it, can provide insight to our hearts. Perhaps many of our money management problems are due to a lack of teaching in our homes - and in our churches. Many people grow up thinking that money is a dirty word.
Personally, I cannot wait to see how my children handle their own finances. If we have taught them how to manage their money well, and to give wisely to God's church and other Christian ministries, they will be blessed and will bless others.
Here are some things you can do
- Attend a Financial Workshop. No matter how much money you have, there are workshops available for you! Crown Financial Ministries offers 12-week courses that are exceptional. There are many others as well.
- See if your church offers debt counseling, or look for non-profit organizations in your area who offer debt reduction seminars.
- Study God's Word to discover what He says about money. Do you tithe? God expects that of us. How can we not give considering what He has given to us?
Acknowledge you can't do it alone
When we acknowledge that money, and the pursuit of money, is a fundamental part of our lives, then we can begin to understand that it is something we need to talk about. For this reason it is important for us to develop healthy ideas with a godly perspective.
