The way that He loves you
I am coming out of a year of unparalleled transition. Nothing seems untouched. Relationships, circumstances, surroundings-everything has changed. I held on for dear life to anything standing still. One morning on my way to work, I made the same stop I had made for 18 months: my favorite little coffee shop. I pranced in and made my usual order: "banana nut bagel with plain cream cheese, please." The server looked at me cheerfully and said, "We're not carrying that kind any more. Is there something else I can get you today?"
I stood stunned with my eyebrows pinned like two barrettes to my hairline. I must have been in shock for some time because the person behind me finally bumped me out of the way, providing all I needed to burst into tears. As I walked out to the car, I looked up and inquired, "Could I have one thing around this place I can count on?"
As I got into the car, I sensed God speaking His Word to my heart. "Beth, I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you."
I love Psalm 136. Every verse concludes with the refrain: "His love endures forever" (NIV). Kings will rise and fall, but His love endures forever. Riches will come, and riches will go. But His love endures forever. Sometimes we'll be healed from physical afflictions, and sometimes we won't. But His love endures forever. The heavens and earth will pass away. But His love endures forever.
The writer and teacher Paul penned the same truth when he proclaimed, "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!" (Romans 8:38-39, Holman Christian Standard Bible).
Do you realize that we have just uncovered the answer to our greatest psychological need? Look what the Word of God says about the emotional needs of all human beings: "What a man desires is unfailing love" (Proverbs 19:22, NIV). Every human being longs for unfailing love. Lavish love. Focused love. Radical love. Love we can count on. The taxicab driver, the plumber, the stockbroker, the runway model, the actress, the streetwalker, the drug pusher, the schoolteacher, the computer programmer, the rocket scientist, the doctor, the lawyer, the president and the custodian all yearn for the same thing-unfailing love.
Have you ever feared that someone would cease loving you? God has carefully and graciously allowed some of my fears to come true so that I would discover that I would not disintegrate. God taught me to survive on His unfailing love.
The only thing I absolutely could not survive is the loss of God's love, and that is a loss I will never have to experience. His love endures forever. That's what He meant by perfect love driving out fear. The Word of God uses the phrase "unfailing love" 32 times, and not once is it attributed to humans. Every single use of the phrase refers to God and God alone. As rich as is the love that others can extend, only God's love is unfailing.
God is not only the answer to a thousand needs, He is the answer to a thousand wants. He is the fulfillment of our chief desire in all of life. For whether or not we've ever recognized it, what we desire is unfailing love.
